ROCHFORD Hundred’s midweek Scott Spencer event saw a return to much improved scoring as 15 players played to their handicap – and four golfers gained a handicap cut because of their scores.

But it was left to 25 handicapper Darrell Williams to lead the field home with a fine 43 points.

Williams took advantage on the four par threes.

He played them in level par with a birdie two being a highlight of his round on the card-wrecking 11th.

A finishing par on the 18th allowed him a two-point winning cushion with his overall efforts seeing his handicap now slashed to 22.

Two points further back was five handicapper Jake Wells.

Wells will probably count himself a little unfortunate as his level par round in normal weeks would have been enough to secure victory.

But not this time.

Wells played some excellent golf throughout with few errors.

His round contained three birdies and three bogeys with a gross one under back nine highlighting his consistency.

Third place belonged to Jack Day on 40 points whose strong finish denied Ray Walsingham on countback.

Two of Rochford’s premier teams had mixed fortunes with the youth shield side carrying on their strong form with a 4-1 home win against Hainault.

But the Thornton Cup side lost away at Thorndon Park in a closely-fought tussle.

The highlight of the week belonged to Jo Rumsey from the ladies’ section.

She enjoyed a fantastic win in the Essex senior’s championship at Orsett as a birdie, birdie, and par finish saw her win by one up from Louella Hitchcock.

Hitchcock also contributed two key points to the Essex second team cause as Essex defeated Bedford.
