RICHARD McEvoy says he cannot wait to take his place at a major again after winning a spot at the 2013 Open.

The 34-year-old from Leigh was one of nine to come through the International Final Qualifying for the Open Championship at Sunningdale.

The Thorpe Hall club member carded solid rounds of 71 and 65 to book his spot at Muirfield, as 96 top players battled it out at the 36-hole event.

Making good putts for birdie at the 16th and par at the 17th were the key to his decisive second-round four-under, but with no scoreboards on display McEvoy was not certain he had qualified until he stepped off the course and spoke to his manager.

“I’m in good form and that really helped,” said McEvoy, who has made the cut for three weeks in a row on the European Tour, and flew back from the BMW International Open in Munich on Sunday to play in Monday’s event in Surrey.

“I qualified for The Open two years ago when it was at Royal St George’s and I have been chomping at the bit to get back since.

“This is what I want as a golfer — to play at majors — and what I need to do is keep improving so I can get that chance all the time.”

Thorpe Hall member McEvoy says he is looking forward to making his debut at Muirfield and says his lack of experience on the course will be helped by the fact his caddie Scott Walker is from the area and knows it well.

It will be his second outing at a major after making the cut at the 2011 Open and finishing in a tied 48th place.

“It was a fantastic experience and one I’ll always cherish,” he said.

“A highlight was making an eagle at the 14th on my second round, and I finished joint third among the qualifiers.

“I also got to play with the defending champion Louis Oosthuizen, which was surreal. Now I can’t wait to experience it all again.”

Fellow Brits Oliver Fisher, Gareth Maybin and Scott Jamieson also qualified at the event, which was won by American Brooks Koepka, who finished on five-under par.
