DANIEL Brooks says the prospect of him being the only south Essex golfer on next year’s European Tour does not faze him at all.

The 26-year-old from Basildon produced four solid rounds in windy conditions in Spain to book his spot in the Qualifying School final on Sunday.

And with Southend’s Matt Southgate missing the cut on the same course in Tarragona, and Leigh’s Richard McEvoy withdrawing from his weather-affected second qualifying stage in Valencia, it means Brooks is now our only local pro in the running to retain his card.

Brooks, who finished his delayed final round yesterday after weather forced a postponement on Tuesday, said: “I don’t really think about it really (possibly being the only south Essex pro on the main tour), but it’s all good.

“And there’s still a long way to go, because I’ve got a whole week ahead.

“I’ve played well all this week really, so it feels good to get the job done and get through.

“I could have holed a few more putts, but I’m hitting it quite nicely and I feel good for Sunday.”

The final at the PGA Catalunya Resort will run between November 10-15 and is billed as one of golf’s ultimate tests.

It will see qualifiers slug it out over two championship courses.

Brooks said: “I’m looking forward to it. It’s quite enjoyable to play there and I quite enjoy it.

“If the course is playing well then it’s good to play on, and I’ve done okay on it over the past couple of years.

“Now I’ll travel up there this afternoon and then get a bit of rest before getting on with some practice tomorrow. I’ll be ready to go on Sunday.”

More than 300 players took part in the second stage of the qualifying school this week, which was held at four different venues.

Mill Hill club member Brooks carded seven-under par to finish in tied eighth at the Lumine Golf & Beach Club.

Thorpe Hall’s Southgate was six shots short of the cut on par on the same course, and his club-mate McEvoy withdrew from the Campo de Golf El Saler, which was battered by brutal winds this week.
