ROCHFORD Hundred Golf Club breezed into the last eight of the Thornton Cup with a 11.5-3.5 home win over The Essex.

After a really good 4.5 and .5 win in the morning foursomes they just needed 3.5 points in the afternoon to win the match.

That was achieved very early on by the first four players in the singles. After that most players took halves but Rochford were winning at the time so the result could have been much better.

"All the team were magnificent and all played fantastic golf during different parts of the game to achieve their win," said a spokesman for the Hall Lane club.

"Again Graham Palmer, team captain would like to thank the greens staff for producing a wonderful course, the members that turned out for their support and Club Captain, Marshall Dale for being the starter."

The Rochford team was: Josh Hickling, Paul Daly, Spencer Wells, Chris Chaplin, Bradley Bawden, Jack Dyer, Mark Walden, Toby Gibbons, Andrew Frye and Tom Watkins.

The win secured a quarter-final place in the county competition against Benfleet rivals and last year’s runners up, Boyce Hill, at Braintree GC on July 17.

James Carlin won the Scott Spencer summer stableford with 39 points from Gary Jones with 38 points.

With the course playing at its most difficult the scores returned resulted in an increase to the SSS of three to SSS 74, the June Sunday Medal was keenly contested across the three divisions.

The winner of Division One was Tom Wells (3) with a nett 76 from David Beale (4) nett 78.

Division Two was won by Andrew Pennington (7) nett 73 with Chris Day (7) nett 75.

Steven Hull (19) 72 was victorious in Division Three on countback from Mark Jeakins (15) .
