THREE Rivers Golf Club at Cold Norton travelled to Rivenhall Oaks for their final group stage match in this year’s Essex Jubilee Cup and emerged victorious, This tournament for clubs in the county is open to male golfers with handicaps between 12 and 24.
Team captain Keith Webb was first into action for Three Rivers and he battled hard against the host club's number one player — only to eventually lose out 2 and 1.
However, this early setback was very quickly reversed with all five of the remaining singles players from Three Rivers recording sound victories.
Craig Davies and Steve Lawrence both had good successes, but of particular note were the triumphs of Nick Price (7 and 5), Peter Haney (6 and 5), and Tony West (5 and 4) who clearly were all in great form.
In the pairs matches, Dave Matthews and Keith Cunningham suffered a very rare defeat.
However, Colin Green and Mick Jennings turned their one hole lead into a 2 up victory by clinching the 18th.
In the last pairs match, club captain Peter Fricker and Mike Etwaroo were one hole down going to to the 18th tee and won the final hole with Etwaroo sinking a thrilling 20 foot putt to halve their match.
Overall Three Rivers recorded a comfortable 6.5-2.5 away victory which proved enough to secure the runners-up spot in their league and take them through — for the first time ever — to the knockout stages.
There they will meet last year’s finalists, Channels.
