Hydro test for Brooks

DANIEL Brooks will look to continue his steady climb up the Challenge Tour rankings when he tees off at the Scottish Hydro Challenge today.

The 25-year-old pro golfer from Basildon moved into 14th place on Sunday with another solid display at the St Omer Open in France.

It was the third tournament in a row he has picked up prize money, and the Mill Hill Golf Club member said it’s important he continues to make the cut.

He said: “Last week in France it was tough conditions and it was just a case of getting it round.

“But I’m happy with how I’ve dug in and stayed patient.

“And I think that is something I’ve added to my game and shows that I’ve matured a bit.

“It will be another tough test in Scotland and it would be nice to do well because I only played one round here last year before I had to pull out with a bad wrist.

“But the important thing is to stay consistently in the money.

“The prize money at this tournament is top heavy, so if I get a chance I need to finish it off to make sure I make the most of the opportunity.”

Brooks, who sometimes trains at Langdon Hills golf club, has played in seven Challenge Tour tournaments this season.

He made his first cut in Spain earlier this month and pocketed 2,320 euros.

And he followed that up with one of his best-ever career showings with a runner-up spot and 17,600 euros in Austria, and last week claimed a purse of 6,406 euros with a 15th-placed finish in France.

Thorpe Hall pro Matt Southgate is also competing at the Scottish Hydro Challenge at Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club in the northern resort town of Aviemore. His 62nd place earned him 1,125 euros in France last week.

And Southgate’s club-mate Richard McEvoy is in action on the European Tour’s BMW International Open in Cologne, Germany.

He is in a group with James Kingston and Richard Johnson and they tee off at 12.50pm.

All the action will be screened on Sky Sports.
