Buxton’s eagle on second helps send him to victory

DEREK Buxton, playing off a 17 handicap, scored an impressive 41 points to earn himself victory in Rochford Hundred’s midweek Scott Spencer stableford.

Buxton’s round exploded into life from the very first tee where he started with a par followed by a magnificent eagle on the par four second.

When he then managed to par the third hole Buxton had already accumulated 11 points.

A couple of double bogeys on his outward nine failed to stop his march to victory as he replied with a birdie on the seventh hole, and a solid points scoring display on the back nine ensured he wasn’t to be caught.

Just a point behind was five handicapper Craig Paton who produced a superb overall round.

Paton had five birdies in his 40 points, with three in a row coming from the ninth hole.

In fact, Paton’s back nine was standing at two under gross and had him on course for a win when a double bogey on the par four 17th stopped him in his tracks. Fellow five handicapper Ray Weidner was another point further back on 39.

Weidner combined three birdies with 10 pars, and was another to play very solidly on the back nine shooting level par.

The first three home also earned themselves a shot reduction to their respective handicaps.

Rochford ladies played for the Quaiche cup which is a medal format.

In form six handicapper Maria Williams was victorious in the silver division and overall shooting 81-6=75 for a reasonably comfortable three shot win from divisional runner up Sue Proctor.

Lorraine Norris took the honours in the bronze section with 98-22=76 to also finish three shots clear in her division from Angela Dale.

Meanwhile, the ladies silver team played their first match in defence of the silver trophy but unfortunately had to give best to Chelmsford by a score of 4-3 after a close encounter.
