Football star Nelson to host charity event
FORMER Southend United footballer Garry Nelson, who has hung up his boots apart from forays into the veterans' game, is now turning his attention to organising a fundraising golf event for Havens Hospieces.
Nelson, who also played in the 90s for Swindon and Charlton and became a famous soccer author, is now working for Leisure Link Promotions in Brentwood which arranges international golf holidays for enthusiatic players.
The 47-year-old from South Benfleet, along with director Doug Fisher, is working flat-out to ensure that the Havens Hospices Golf Day, which is taking place on June 19th at Stockbrook Manor in Billericay, is a great success.
Nelson said: "Through my many links in the sporting world, I feel privileged to be able to put them to good use for such a worthy cause.
"This golf day for Havens Hospices is just the first of a number of events I hope to organise in aid of the charity."
The golf day will be a shotgun start with a maximum of 25 teams of four people being able to take part in the competition.
There will be prizes for the best three teams overall as well as the longest drive and nearest the pin.
In the evening a three course meal will be served with the opportunity to raise more valuable funds for the charity through a raffle and an auction.
The cost of a team of four will be £400 + VAT, which includes refreshments and food on arrival, 18 holes of golf, commemorative polo shirt, goodie bag and dinner.
Havens Hospices incorporates Fair Havens Hospice and Little Havens Children's Hospice.
Fair Havens is celebrating 25 years of providing hospice care in south Essex this June, while Little Havens has now been open for 10 years, giving respite breaks to life-limited children and their families from across the county.

>FOLLOWING his joint 17th placing in the Moroccan Classic at the weekend, Thorpe Hall's Richard McEvoy has moved up to 47th in the European Challenge Tour rankings.
He's got 6,171 euros in earnings after five events and, after a break this week, the tour now moves on to Italy with the Piemonte Open starting in Torino a week today.
