Wet course cannot slow Witney’s Medal charge
BELFAIRS Golf Club held their May medals over the weekend in fine conditions apart from a reasonably wet course.
A recent break from the game, including a holiday in America, helped Mark Witney as he was a man on a mission.
He weighed in with a superb net 66 in a striking round that matched his colourful appearance on the course to claim Saturday's medal.
Martin Kett was in also in solid form with a 70 and so playing to his 18 handicap. Alan Pace also hit a respectable 72 to grab third spot.
On Sunday, Mark Duguid added another medal to his recent midweek success as his excellent net 67 earned him Sunday's top prize.
Club vice-captain Peter Mahoney hit good form with a 69 from his 14 handicap, while president Dave Smith held off former captain Bob Clark on countback to grab third place with 71.
Club secretary Brian Harvey took Friday's honours in a day of relatively high scoring for medal success.
Harvey's three over 73 was enough for the medal with Jim Dennis achieving the same score, but Harvey had a better back nine.
Fresh from a month in Tenerife, David Taylor took third spot with a solid 74.
The Annual Bader Cup qualifier, a mixed pairs event, was contested on Bank Holiday Monday in glorious sunshine and it proved an exciting contest.
The new pairing of Jon Howley and lowest handicap lady partner Joan Smith pipped husband and wife pairing Peter and Mandy Moir on countback with both duos achieving a brilliant 39 points as they took advantage of the splendid conditions.
Howley and Smith go forward to represent the club at the regional finals in this prestigious event.
>ROCHFORD Ladies braved heavy rain and wind in the Ping Fourball Betterball competition with victory going to lady captain Jo Rumsey and Carol Evans with 36 Stableford points.
