Rochford thrash Basildon
ROCHFORD Hundred's superior lower handicaps and home advantage proved decisive in their comfortable 12-3 first round Essex Thornton Cup victory over Basildon on Sunday.
Rochford got off to the best possible start with a 4-1 win in the morning foursomes and never looked like letting that slip in the singles after lunch.
But it was the new towners who drew first blood in the foursomes with Stuart Michelson and Gordon Longmuir coming from one down with three holes to play to beat Matt Fearn and Tony Hadley one up.
After that it was a procession of fairly easy Rochford wins.
Steve Weidner and Joe Galbraith beat Michael Watson and Robert Worthington 3 and 1, Paul Birrell and Jordan Moss eased in 5 and 4 against David Pettet and David Phillips, Talat Buta and Andy Milne saw off Paul Lagden and David Lloyd by the same margin.
And brothers Ashley and Christian Foreman proved too strong in a 6 and 4 success against Glen Eastman and James Dennison.
The singles produced a similar comfortable ride with Rochford winning 8-2.
Galbraith and Michelson halved the opening match but apart from Buta, who lost 1 down to Eastman, and Birrell, who shared the point with Lagden, the home side cantered past the winning post.
Fearn pipped a battling Dennison 2 and 1, Christian Foreman beat Watson 3 and 2, Weidner sent Longmuir packing 3 and 1 and debut boy Milne notched a 2 and 1 success over Worthington.
The final games saw Moss and Ashley Foreman beat Phillips and Pettet respectively 4 and 2 and Hadley came in 3 and 2 over Lloyd.
Rochford are again at home in the second round but face a sterner test against Channels on June 1st.
In other matches, Billericay's Crondon Park were not unhappy to see Basildon snooker star Stuart Bingham come out of the world championships.
For he enjoyed successes in foursomes and singles in their 10-5 home win over Ballards Gore.
Two matches went to sudden death after 7.5-apiece ties - Three Rivers going down to Five Lakes but Orsett overcoming Chigwell.
Local results: Five Lakes 7.5, Three Rivers 7.5 (Five lakes won play-off); Castle Point 6, Lords (Rayleigh) 9; Crondon Park 10, Ballards Gore 5;East Herts 8.5, Boyce Hill 6.5; Canons Brook 12, Garon Park 3; Braintree 8.5, Thorpe Hall 6.5; Belhus Park 2.5, Romford 12.5; Hartswood 2.5, Stock Brook Manor 12.5; Rochford 12, Basildon 3; The Burstead 10, The Warren 5; Orsett 7.5, Chigwell 7.5 (Orsett won play-off); Thorndon Park 10.5, Langdon Hills 4.5.
