Guests enjoy visit to Southend Golf Club

ON a nice sunny day, Southend Golf Club played its annual guest day with competitors coming from as far away as Hartlepool to play.

With a busy field, scoring in the fourball betterball was of a high nature.

Playing with the host club's captain Mick Edmunds were his Kindred Club counterparts Len Jacobs (Boyce Hill), Alan Gribbon (Belfairs), Peter Macarthy (Thorpe Hall) and Richard Hayes (Rochford vice-captain) The morning winners were Brian Lauezzari, Steve McGregor (Hartlepool) with 46 points.

The afternoon was won by Dave Kreyling and Tom Arnold (33 points over 13 holes) Overall winners were P.Jefford and S Bonallack (77 points) with Ray Threadgold and Richard Hayes second 74.

Nearest the pin in the morning was Mick McGregor with captain Edmunds winning the prize in the afternoon.

Edmunds also took the longest drive award.

l CLUB secretary Iain Evans (16) won his first competition at Ballards Gore when, partnered by cadet Jack Baldry (5) they won the Heseltine trophy, a greensomes Stableford.

They had 14 pars, three bogeys and an eagle on the par five seventh in their one over par gross 74 giving them 46 Stableford points.

Six points behind, with 40 points to take second place were Derek Johnson (24) and Alan McNair (19) whose score was boosted by four pointers on holes nine and 16.

No fewer than five pairs finished with 39 points with third place going to Richard Sheppard (11) and Gary Treen (17) by virtue of scoring 23 points over their back nine.

Josh McAlpine (5) and Tony Stamp (21), Keith Butler (10) and Tony Gibb (14), Rod Smith (19) and Duncan Johnson (16), Alan Jones (11) and Steve Reynolds (23) were the pairs to miss out.

>IT was a family affair at Boyce Hill Ladies when the monthly Stableford was played in perfect weather conditions.

Melanie Perrin (6) won the silver division with 38 points, cutting her handicap to five, with mum Andrea Boyce third on countback.

Second was Frances Spicer (19) with 34 points, beating Andrea (15) by the very narrowest of margins.

The bronze division was won by Jean Shepherd (21) with 36 points and cutting her handicap to 20 - putting her back in the silver division.

Shepherd's daughter Chris Emerson (34) was third, just being beaten into the runners-up spot by Josie Halls (29) after both had 32 points.
