My Olympic highlight - Eastwood School head of PE Scott Maclean
11:42am Wednesday 4th July 2012 in Sport
SCOTT Maclean vividly remembers watching Seb Coe winning 1,500m gold at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
Maclean was just 10 years old at the time.
And the race kick-started his own interest in athletics.
“That race left a magical imprint on me that has never left and was undoubtedly the inspiration for my love of sport,” said Maclean.
“I had to watch the final on a small television that didn’t have the greatest of pictures on the Hebridean Island of North Uist.
“We were there on vacation visiting my grandparents and there were loads of people packed around the TV screen.
“I was lying down right in front with the best view.
“I have obviously seen the race back many times over the years but that magical moment when Coe crosses the line in first place and the look on his face when he realises that he had won is incredible and still sends shivers down my spine.
“There was many a time on that holiday and times since when I have been Seb Coe in my head crossing that finish line. And my father did use it to his advantage by telling me what the distance to the shops was when he wanted me to get him something in hurry!”
