WESTCLIFF Lawn were celebrating after winning the ladies’ county cup.

The six-strong ladies team defeated Frinton 2-1 to claim the Harry Brickwood Ladies’ Senior Cup at Deanes School on Sunday.

Things started badly for the London Road club when Gill Sanderson and Hazel Wynn lost 6-4 7-5 to Julia Holder and Fenella Pearey.

But Lawn’s second pair of Sarah Ball and Cally Flinders defeated Julie Hamlet and Sue Roberts 6-4 6-4 to restore parity.

And Fiona Harcourt and Marg Rimmer saw off Mary Beasley and Teena Venables 6-3 6-2 to claim the silverware.

But it was disappointment for Westcliff Hardcourts as were unable to defeat defending champions Grove (Chelmsford) in the Don Barton Mixed Cup.

The team from the county town lifted the cup for the third year in succession following a 2-1 victory.

Hard were on the back foot from the first rubber as Denise Downey and Olly Greenslade beat Virunee Viravong and Simon Chesher 6-4 6-2 in the mixed pair.

Grove secured the win in the men’s rubber as Andy Bennett and Mark Crick defeated Elliot Keene and Jason Watkins 6-1 6-3.

But Karen Poole and Fiona Stone secured a 6-4 6-1 win over Caroline Beckerleg and Tatiana Golikova to prevent a 3-0 whitewash.

Gidea Park made it a consecutive hat-trick of wins in the Ian Pitt Men’s Senior Cup after beating Woodford Wells 2.5-0.5.

Richard Stephens and Neil Taylor drew 6-3 5-7 with Wells’ Vince Ranson and Simon Woodcock.

But John Caddies and Peter Mott beat Wayne Donaldson and Pat Osborn 6-1 6-0 and Dave Lambe and Wayne Lemoine beat Selwyn Jones and Peter O’Donnell 6-4 6-2 to secure the cup.

Essex County LTA were represented by Harry Brickwood, Ian Pitt, John Blewett, Sheila Waller, Steve Wynn and George Sabiniak.
