PARALYMPIAN Robin Womack will have medals on his mind when he competes in the IPC European Championships next month.

The 43-year-old Southend athlete has had his place confirmed for both the shot put and the discus in Swansea.

And he is determined to produce two great performances in order for him to take part at the Rio Paralympics in 2016.

“I’m going into the Europeans with different goals to what I had in London when I got the bronze medal,” said Womack.

“In 2012 I aimed for the final and then seeing what happened after that, but this time I’m going there to get medals. It’s going to be difficult, especially in the discus, but I’m having a good season so far and can see no reason why I can’t get two medals.

“The shot is my main event and it’s important I do well in that so I can stay on funding and improve the chances of me making Rio.”

Womack memorably won bronze at the London 2012 Paralympics but endured a difficult season last time around.

The keen Southend United supporter failed to win a medal during a luckless display at the World Championships.

But he has now banished that disap-pointment and is now ranked in the top three in Europe for both of his events.

“I’m second in the shot and second or third in the discus so I’m pleased with how it’s going but there’s still room for improve-ment,” said Womack.

“I haven’t got over 11 metres in the shot yet this season and that’s another target of mine.

“My season’s best is 10.77m which I want to beat but it’s hard because the judges keep on having different interpretations of the rules.

“I could also struggle if we’re competing on a metal plate.

“But I’m training well, I’m confident and I want to bring at least one medal back with me.”

Womack will be going for glory in the discus on Wednesday, August 20, before competing in the shot three days later.
