LEWIS Plato had a slice of good luck as he added another win to his tally in the Radical SR3 Challenge.

The Billericay racing driver followed up his wins at Snetterton in the last round with victory at Castle Combe.

And the fortunate deployment of the safety car offset a pit stop penalty and allowed the 21-year-old to take the chequered flag.

Plato was only able to complete four laps during a wet qualifying session but he still put his Radical in second place alongside championship leaders Peter Belshaw and Phil Keen.

Rain started again as the cars lined up on the Witlshire circuit’s grid but Plato made a good start and settled into second behind early race leader and Supreme Motorsport team-mate Bradley Ellis.

Jesper Westerholm had threatened Plato but his challenge ended when he pitted, leaving Plato in an increasingly distant second.

Plato pitted early in the pit stop window during the 90-minute race and he came out still second but then received a penalty for a pit stop infringement.

He was 23 seconds off the lead but as he returned to the pitlane, the safety car came out and rather than lose time he gained on leader Andy Cummings, who had replaced Ellis during the pit stops.

Plato was 4.379 seconds behind Cummings but then his second stroke of luck saw the race leader forced to serve two penalties, which handed Plato a 1.3-second lead after another safey car intervention.

Keen pressurised Plato in the later stages but he defended well to take the win by 0.319 seconds.

Plato remains second in the championship heading into the next round on the Silverstone GP circuit on Sunday, August 17.
