BILLERICAY Boxing Club will be taking a small team of young boxers out to Lithuania to take part in a four day pre-season training camp next month.

The team will be led by junior squad tour captain, 13-year-old Alfie Despy.

He boxed for Billericay in competitions all last season and made it to last year’s national schoolboy open class championship semi-finals. The Billericay boys will be training alongside some of the national squad members of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and a team is also coming over from Finland to join in with the training.

When the team returns home, they will be preparing some of their seniors so they are fit and ready to enter the National Development Novice championships.

Last season, the club had one of their Elite Open Class boxers compete in the national ABA Finals at Liverpool.

Also last season the club’s very strong schoolboy and junior squad had six boxers through to the national semi-finals and one junior through to the National finals.

The juniors will also be ready to start the season fast, before the club gets no less than eight of their novice junior boxers ready to compete in the National Junior Novice Championships. This season is the first for about nine years that there has been a National Novice Championship put on by the governing body.

This is expected to be a great championship for the Billericay boxers as they have a very talented young squad coming through.

The club is also one of a very few that have achieved the prestigious Sport England Club Mark accreditation just over 18 months ago. l ANYONE wishing to take up boxing, for fun or competition, should contact Les Cooke by email to billericayboxingclub @fsmail.net
