BENFLEET’s Mason Law is ready to make his Qatar floodlight debut on Sunday – and he thinks that Essex’s gloomy autumnal evenings may help him out.

He’s been called up for the Intermoto Ponyexpres Kawasaki World Supersport Team for the series final round in Qatar.

The former King John schoolboy, who now rubs shoulders with many of Europe’s top racers, is excited at the prospect of battling in the heat in the motorsport-mad Gulf State.

His call up follows a brilliant debut at the Magny Cours circuit in France –where he scored world championship points and ended up 12th.

Now Qatar beckons, but the prospect of racing under unfamiliar floodlights is not bothering the teenager as much as it will some of his rivals.

He said: “I have a feeling that being under floodlights will level the playing field a bit for me.

“We have not used the Qatar circuit for a few years and most of the riders on the circuit have not raced under floodlights before.

“I’m hoping that this will be slightly to my advantage because, coming from Essex, I’m used to gloomy evenings and on the British circuit we’ve often had to race in very low light conditions.

“I’m trying to get prepared for what is to come. I’ve been exercising on my rowing machine at home with the heating turned up to get my body acclimatised to the heat.

“Very few riders have ridden in this heat and humidity and we’ll also be faced with the decision of which visor to use to take the glare off the floodlights.

“I think at the moment that I’ll be using a light smoke visor, which I think will be best. I’ve also been playing a lot of games which gives you a feel for racing in low light,” he added.

The Essex racer’s domestic season – which is now over – was a see-saw season with some great performances, tempered by crashes and a electrical problem which dogged his bike. It meant he only scored points in seven of the 12 outings.

Despite this he still finished seventh overall.

He said: “It was a weird season. It started so well with a second place in the first round but I had a crash and then there were the technical problems.”

However, he’s hoping that, when he jets off to Qatar, later today, he’ll be able to turn a few heads on the Intermoto Ponyexpres Kawasaki ZX6R he’ll be racing on Sunday November 2.

Law will be racing in Qatar alongside team mates Marino and PJ Jacobsen and with their experience and Law’s youth and determination it could be a good meeting for the team.

Law said: “ I surprised a lot of people – but not myself – in France and I am aiming to do it again. I fly out on Tuesday and will be on the track Thursday and Friday.”

“A couple of weeks ago I was humping desks around in Grays working for my father’s office fitting business, so this will be a brilliant way of getting back racing. They’re a fantastic team to be involved with and it’s going to be great,” he added.
