BRADLEY Smith’s bid to achieve a third consecutive driver’s championship could all hinge on the outcome of Saturday in Spain.

The Billericay racing driver is leading the Radical European Masters standings by eight points heading into the final round at the Circuit de Barcelona.

But Smith’s dad and Mectech Motorsport boss Mike Smith believes what happens during qualifying and the first two races on Saturday may be pivotal.

“We will be testing today and tomorrow and if we have not got it right by Saturday then we never will,” said the Mectech chief.

“But after Spa was cancelled earlier in the season, those races were added to this weekend, so we’ve got four races.

“We’ve got half-hour of qualifying followed by two 50-minute races on Saturday and I think that will affect the outcome of the championship.”

Smith, 23, took over from Tristan Vildas at the top of the championship after a fine weekend at Monza in the last round saw him overturn the 13-point advantage the Estonian had over him.

Smith bagged two pole positions, two fastest laps and two wins at the Italian circuit as he bids to make it a hat-trick of Radical crowns.

He claimed the Radical SR Challenge crown last season and the Radical Clubman’s Cup drivers’ title in 2012.

Mectech has no settings for Barcelona, which is home to the Spanish Grand Prix, but Smith said the team will not do anything different to what has proved successful so far this season.

He admits it is fairly even between his son and Vildas, although Smith was quicker at Spa and Monza.

And he said it would be good to win the championship at the home track of Vildas’ team, Speed Factory Racing.
