SOUTHEND Hockey Club’s third team got their first league win of the season with a gutsy 4-3 win over Havering III.

Hosts Southend took the lead early in the first half, with Jamie McPhee pouncing on a rebound off the goalkeeper and tucking the ball away.

A few minutes later and Southend struck again. Michael Walsh rolled back the years with a strike from the top of the D to make it 2-0.

Havering pulled a goal back close to half time, ensuring a cagey start to the second half.

A strong midfield display from man of the match Dan Darlington, Gavin Cheeseman and Dan Moore, allowed Southend to build on their advantage and Phil Leggett got on the end of a great team move to make it 3-0.

Havering again closed the gap with two short corner goals in as many minutes, and kept goalkeeper Jack Harding busy, but it was captain Leggett who again silenced the opposition, scoring with a deft touch to claim the victory.

Elsewhere, the men’s first team won 6-1 away at Upminster II, while the seconds lost 3-1 in a derby game with Old Southendians.

Southend women’s first team went down 1-0 to Hertford in Eastern Division Two C.

It was a bad weekend for all of the club’s women’s teams, as the seconds and thirds were both beaten too.
