Max Whitlock in action of the pommel
MAX Whitlock missed out on the BBC sports personality of the year award tonight.
The Basildon-based gymnast was one of 10 British sports stars in the running for the annual award.
But Whitlock, who trains at South Essex Gymnastics club, was beaten to the crown by Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Golfer Rory McIlroy was runner-up and athlete Jo Pavey finished third in the poll.
