A THORPE Bay junior school will travel to Portsmouth after it won a Southend United football tournament – and it did so without conceding a single goal.

Bournes Green Junior School won the Kinder+Sport Kids Cup at Waterside Farm, in Canvey against 16 other local primary schools.

More than 150 under-11s took part in the national junior six-a-side tournament, and Bournes Green stormed to success.

In 11 matches, they kept 11 shutouts, beating Thundersley Primary School 1-0 in the final.

And Michael Smith, football coach at Bournes Green, said the pupils were superb.

“To win it was great but to do so without conceding is brilliant,” he said. “The boys have played together for a while and that showed.

“There were some teams we have played before and been beaten by but we have grown as a team and that is what we want.

“We played in front of the school’s former football coach Terry Galley and to win so well in front of him meant a lot to everyone.”

Bournes Green will head to Portsmouth next year to represent Southend United and Mr Smith said the pupils couldn’t be more confident.

“To win in this manner has put us in a good place,” he said. “We played well and are confident so we look forward to the challenge.”
