CANVEY Island’s Mike Hales continued to his 100 per cent record in the cage with a convincing win against Jay Barber.

Hales was triumphant for the fourth time in succession at Garon Park But that was only possible after the plucky Barber agreed to fight for the second time that evening after Hales’ original opponent Danny Brook opted to pull out on the eve of the bout.

“My original opponent pulled out on the day of the fight but luckily enough I was able to find another opponent and I have huge respect for Jay for stepping up,” said Hales, 19.

“If it wasn’t for him then I wouldn’t have been able to fight and that would’ve been awful.

“I had trained really hard and, above all else, I really wanted to be a part of the show because it was in memory of Joe Emmons.”

Hales landed a succession of punches before the bout was stopped inside the first round.

And he pleased to have again come out on top.

“Because of the pull-out it wasn’t what I wanted but I thought I fought well and it was great to win again,” said the teenager.

“My coaches Dan Burzotta, Diana Sigston and Georgie Smith have all been a huge help and Marshal Smith helped me prepare so I owe all of them an awful lot.”

Hales will now resume training at SS8 gym on Canvey, along with TSG.

But he is already looking forward to his next fight which has yet to be confirmed.

“I'm going to carry on training hard and learn more everyday to come back to the cage next time and put on an even better show for everybody there,” added Hales.

The talented youngster was also keen to thank his sponsors Huff and Puff castles and back2beds for their backing.
