BILLERICAY’S Andy D’Urso is celebrating the unique achievement of having refereed at all 92 clubs in the top four divisions of English football.

The 51-year-old ticked off his final ground when he took charge of Newport County’s recent home defeat to Morecambe.

And D’Urso, who has been officiating in the Football League since 1990, is rightfully proud of the accomplishment.

“It’s really nice to have achieved it, especially as it had been a goal of mine for the past few years,” said D’Urso.

“I had a look about five or six years ago and it was then I realised how close I was.

“Most of the ones I hadn’t done were a little bit further away so I spoke to the Football League and I said I wouldn’t charge the full amount for travelling expenses.

“After that I only had three left to do at the start of this season which were Morecambe, Fleetwood and Newport.

“They were all so welcoming and were fantastic places to visit which made the sense of achievement even better.

“I don’t know how many other referees have done it but it’s always something I can look back on with real pride at the end of my long career.”

D’Urso singled out Liverpool’s Anfield ground and Newcastle United’s St James Park as stadiums with special atmospheres.

But he also added he enjoyed refereeing at smaller grounds where crowds were close to the pitch.

And he is still enjoying being the man in the middle.

“I love the game so I still enjoy refereeing and there will be a big void in my life when the time comes to hang up my boots,” said D’Urso.

“I don’t enjoy the long journeys back home and the games certainly takes a toll on your body.

“But I’m a firm believer of when you don’t enjoy something it’s time to step out and I haven’t reached that stage with being a referee just yet.”
