WICKFORD’S Josh Batch has labelled winning the Challenge Cup final with Cardiff Devils as the biggest achievement of his ice hockey career.

The former Westcliff High School pupil helped the Devils upset Sheffield Steelers 2-1 in their own Motorpoint Arena home.

And Batch, who made his side’s second goal, was delighted to have come out on top.

“Without a doubt this is the greatest achievement of my career to date as it is my first major championship as a professional,” beamed Batch.

“It was an unbelievable experience winning the final and the atmosphere was incredible so I’d like to thank all the fans who travelled up for that.”

Two goals in the space of just 108 seconds saw Cardiff come out on top as the club also lifted their first piece of silverware since winning the Knockout Cup during the 2006/07 season.

But Batch always felt Cardiff were capable of getting their hands on the cup, despite Sheffield being just above them in the Rapid Elite League standings.

“We were confident going in to the game as we know we can beat any team in the league,” said Batch, whose side are currently third in the standings.

“It's just a case of executing our game plan and playing to our strengths, while minimising our mistakes which we were able to do.”

Batch now wants more of the same during the remainder of the season as the Devils bid to win another two trophies.

And the 24-year-old believes winning at the weekend will have given the team a huge lift.

“This win should provide a huge boost for the remainder of the season,” said Batch.

“Braehead gave up points to Nottingham on Saturday night meaning we now have a chance to win the league.

“However, that will probably mean us having to win the rest of our games.

“We control our own destiny in that regard but it will not be easy as we still have Sheffield to play three more times.”
