BERRY Boys ABC boxer Luke Brickwood earned the best home boxer prize at the club’s show.

Brickwood secured a unanimous points victory in his senior bout with Danson’s George King.

“Luke put in a blinding performance and it was a good fight against a game opponent,” said Berry coach Mark Quirey.

“He was given the best home boxer award on the night and was a worthy winner.”

The other senior bout saw Berry’s Lewis Smith lose on a unanimous points verdict to King’s club-mate Max Hudson.

But Quirey said the Berry corner thought it was a controversial decision and “couldn’t believe it”.

It was a disappointing night for the host club in the junior and youth bouts with all their boxers losing.

Jamie Short made his Berry debut but lost on a close unanimous points decision to Braintree’s Tyler Harvey.

Lewis Stevens went down to a unanimous points defeat against Holland Shore’s Tyler Upchurch.

And club-mate Jake Sparks lost on points to Small Holdings’ Kalen Foreman, who won the best visiting boxer award for his performance.

Danson’s James Cook sailed off with a unanimous points win against Berry’s George Waters.

Billericay & Wickford’s Jack McInnery also lost to a unanimous points decision against Danny Davis (Danson).

The schoolboys bouts saw Berry’s Shay Norman get a unanimous points win over Mason Stewert (Cheshunt).

Southend’s Sol Brook secured a unanimous points verdict over Five Star’s Max Leydon, while Chalvedon’s Ronnie Anderson defeated Finley Marvin (Stevenage) on a unanimous decision.

Skills bouts do not have decisions and are there to help with the development of boxers and give them experience of performing in public.

The show at James Hornsby School, in Leinster Road, Laindon, saw five boxers from south Essex clubs in the ring.

Among them was Billericay & Wickford boxer Ollie Willsher, who became the first boxer with type one diabetes to compete following a recent change in boxing regulations.

Quirey added: “It was a really good show with a great atmosphere. Most of the bouts were closely contested and could have gone either way.”
