C&K BASILDON Ladies boss Steve Tilson was left ruing individual errors following his side’s 4-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks capitalised on two defensives lapses to condemn Basildon to their first away defeat of the season.

And Tilson was disappointed by how easily their hosts were allowed to score.

“Charlton are a very good side but we gifted them a couple of goals,” said the former Southend United manager.

“We had two backpasses get intercepted by a striker and you just can’t get away with mistakes like that at this level.

“The girls worked incredibly hard and I really can’t fault them for effort but we need to cut out these mistakes.

“It would also be great if we could strengthen the squad with another two or things signings but that’s going to be easier said than done.”

C&K Basildon headed into the game having beaten West Ham United 1-0 just 72 hours before kick-off.

But Charlton started the match well and goalkeeper Cherie Rowlands was called upon to make a save low to her left hand side after a quarter of an hour.

Five minutes later, Charlton came even closer to taking the lead when Sam Pittuck’s shot from just inside the penalty area struck the bar.

Rowlands then denied Nikkita Whinnett when the Charlton player found herself through on goal.

But, it was C&K Basildon who took the lead on 34 minutes when Claire Lacey flicked on Amy Nash’s free kick, and Zoe Rushen picked up the loose ball before setting it back to Hannah Porter whose shot nestled in the bottom corner of the net.

However, Charlton equalised just four minutes later when Gemma Shepherd picked up a loose ball on the edge of the C&K Basildon penalty area before sending a shot past Rowlands.

The Addicks then went in front five minutes into the second half when Nikkita Whinnett finished from close range before Charlton made sure of the points with two goals in the final 15 minutes, both scored by Shepherd to complete her hat-trick.
