JUSTIN Edinburgh has dramatically become one of the leading candidates to take over as the manager of Premier League strugglers Aston Villa.

The former Southend United defender, 45, who lives in Billericay, is currently the boss of League One table-toppers Gillingham.

But despite his success at the Gills, Edinburgh was not even in the frame to take over from Tim Sherwood at Villa until a suddenrush of bets on the former Tottenham fullback saw him go from 66/1 to 4/1 to get the job.

He later fell back to 12/1 alongside the likes of Brendan Rogers and David Moyes.

Edinburgh started his managerial career in the Essex non-league scene with his home-town club Billericay Town.

He also had a spell as the boss of Grays Athletic in the Conference and has also managed Rushden & Diamonds and Newport County who he got promoted into the Football League before moving on to Gillingham.
