MAX Whitlock won a stunning gold medal on the pommel horse in the final of the World Gymnastics Championships.

The Basildon gymnast was last up in the final and produced a stunning routine that scored 16.133 points and knocked his Great Britain team-mate Louis Smith down into the silver medal position.

In doing so, 22-year-old Whitlock became the first male gymnast to win a gold medal at the World Championships.

"It's unbelievable," Whitlock told the BBC afterwards. "When I dreamt of hitting this moment I never thought I'd get too emotional, but I'm feeling it now. I'm over the moon.

"It's been a tough year for me. I got glandular fever at the start of the year but this makes up for everything. I can't believe it, I'm speechless."

The gold medal added to a silver medal Whitlock won earlier in the day in the floor final and made up for the disappointment of missing out on a medal in the all-around final.

Whitlock, who fell on his high bar routine while in silver medal position in Friday night's all-around final, dazzled in the individual final for the floor exercise.

Whitlock scored 15.566 points to finish second behind Japan's Kenzo Shirai who scored a majestic 16.233 points.

The two individual medals are Whitlock's second and third prizes of the championships, which are being held at Glasgow's Hydro Arena, after he and his South Essex Gym club team-mate Brinn Bevan were part of the British outfit that won silver medals in the team competition.
