REISS Beckford wants his World Championship debut to be a stepping stone for next summer’s Olympics.

Beckford’s displays for Jamaica in Glasgow last week secured his place at the test event for Rio next April.

And the 23-year-old is now keen to keep on impressing in a bid to make it to Brazil.

“I made a few little mistakes but the aim was to secure a place in the test event for Rio and I did that so I couldn’t really ask for much more,” said Beckford.

“I’ll have some downtime now before getting ready to that in April where I’ll hopefully qualify for the Olympics and you’ll get to see me twice in Rio next year.”

The test event is also taking place in Rio but to ensure he can return for the Olympics, Beckford must reach a qualifying mark which has yet to be announced.

However, finally getting to appear on a world stage has made Beckford even more determined to succeed.

“It was amazing being in Glasgow,” said Beckford, who was part of England’s team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

“It was my first World Championships and it was Jamaica’s first as a team as well so I was on a high the whole time I was there.

“Having tried so many times and missed out it meant a lot more for me to be there.

“It was a crazy experience but having that opportunity has really motivated me.

“It’s given me a really big push and now I want to be able to get back and enjoy something like that again.”
