BRINN Bevan admitted to relishing being at the receiving end of South Essex Gymnastics Club’s latest welcome home party.

Fresh from helping Great Britain to win team silver at the World Championships. Bevan was given a huge ovation by hundreds of fans on his return to Basildon yesterday.

And the 18-year-old insisted it made a nice to having to help plan the party.

“In the past whenever I’ve been at these events it’s been me in the crowd cheering and helping to put the pictures up on the walls to welcome Max (Whitlock) back.

“To be on the other end of it this time is crazy but brilliant and it was great that so many people came out to see us.”

Bevan performed superbly well in the team final to help Great Britain win their first World Championship medal in the event.

But the Thundersleey based youngster felt it took him time to adjust to the atmosphere inside the SSE Hydro.

“In qualification it took me by surprise a little bit because I didn’t expect the crowd to be quite so loud,” said Bevan, who was competing at his first senior global event.

“However, going into the final I knew what to expect.

“I was able to get my head down and I did a lot better after that.”

Bevan performed well on the pommel horse and on the vault during the final to help Great Britain finish second.

However, the former Deanes School pupil has yet to come to terms with the size of the achievement.

“It’s not really sunk in yet and I’m still floating around on cloud nine,” said Bevan.

“It wasn’t something we expected either.

“We knew we were capable of getting a bronze medal but to come away with a silver just showed how costly mistakes can be.”

Bevan will now be bidding to build on his medal winning performance and secure his place in Great Britain’s squad for next summer’s Olympics.

But he also knows it will be incredibly tough to earn selection.

“The Olympics are what I’ve been working towards but from the World Championships squad you have to drop one team member for Rio,” said Bevan.

“It’s all friendly competition but it’s going to be so hard to qualify because everyone is just so good.”
