SNOOKER: Sydney Wilson recorded arguably the most impressive win of his career at the UK Snooker Championship on Tuesday and the Southend potter is convinced he can now push on.

Wilson squared off with the 15th seed Michael White in the first round at the Barbican Centre in York with the Englishman prevailing 6-5 against the man more than 100 places higher than him in the tour rankings.

And, after struggling so far during his first season on the main tour, the 25-year-old is adamant this victory could be a turning point.

“It was a very good result. I’m very pleased especially because I’ve struggled during the last few events,” said Wilson. “To beat a player like Mike is good for me and good for my confidence but the decider was a bit edgy. The important chance fell to me in the end and I took it.

“I want to make a few less errors because I let him into the game but he didn’t really get going during the match.

“That’s up there with the best wins of my career. I think he was seeded 15 for this, so that’s great for me.

“I’ve found the step up to the tour this season very tough. I’ve played the likes of [Mark] Selby, [Judd] Trump and Dominic Dale who are all top players, so it is tricky.”

Next up for Wilson is either Barry Pinches or Mark Joyce, either man seemingly beatable for the world No.118.

However there was disappointment for Langdon Hills’ Zak Surety as he went down 6-4 to Jack Lisowski and Basildon’s Allan Taylor, who lost 6-2 against Martin Gould.
