BERRY ABC coach Mark Quirey is confident Ryan Butler will secure a third national boxing title on Friday night – providing he listens to his corner.

Butler already has consecutive ABA Junior Cadet crowns under his belt and will box in the 80kg-plus final at Bristol.

The Wickford fighter secured a split decision verdict over Arena ABC’s Jake Carr in the semi-finals at Portsmouth on Saturday.

“We are confident that Ryan can do it as long as he ups his workrate, relaxes and boxes like we know he can,” said Quirey.

“To be honest, we were not happy with him in the first round of the semi-final because he didn’t do what he was supposed to do.

“He did it in the third round when he went for it but Ryan knows he must not leave it to the last round.

“He lost the first round against Carr, nicked the second and nearly stopped him in the third.”

Quirey put the slow start down to nerves as Butler has only had 11 bouts.

But he knows what his fighter is capable of when he relaxes and boxes naturally.

“He may be a novice and inexperienced but he is still undefeated and has had five stoppages,” added Quirey, who spars with Butler at the club’s base in Langdon Hills.

Butler will contest the final in Bristol on Friday night and will face Ryan Bewick from Boldon ABC in Tyne & Wear.
