JOHN Wayne Hibbert is confident he will “steal the show” when he defends his two titles against Tommy Martin at London’s Copper Box Arena on Saturday.

The Horndon-on-the-Hill boxer is on a star-studded undercard at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, live on Sky Sports, featuring Super-Middleweight George Groves, with Hibbert defending his two titles – the Commonwealth and WBC International Super-Lightweight crowns.

And the 31-year-old is feeling chipper ahead of what promises to be a bruising encounter against Martin, who is 10 years his junior.

“I think the preparation has been perfect this time – my best ever in the run up to a fight,” said Hibbert, who has been training for the fight in the warmer climates of Tenerife. “I am about 6lbs over my 10 stone limit at the moment but the weight will be bang on by the time the weigh-in happens on Friday.

“I feel fitter and stronger than I have before – much more so than before the last Dave Ryan fight (in September).

“I have sparred over 130 rounds in the run-up to this fight and feel great. I remember when I used to spar with Tommy his trainer used to tell me to ease off and that won’t be happening on Saturday.

“I have no niggles either and I feel prepared for anything. Tommy has been saying on social media that our sessions used to be like wars but if thought that then he hasn’t seen anything yet.”

Martin, 21, has won all 13 of his fights to date but faces his toughest assignment to date on Saturday.

However, bookmakers are making the Cambridgeshire boxer the favourite for the tussle, despite Hibbert being the man defending the belts.

But that does not concern the dad-of-two, as he looks to re-affirm his status as champion after winning the belts in dramatic fashion, following a back injury to Ryan during his last bout.

“I don’t know why he is the favourite but I am fine with that,” said Hibbert. “He is coming to try and win my belts and he has an uphill task.

“I don’t think I have anything to prove to other people. Maybe I do to myself but not to anyone else. I am fully prepared and have worked very hard for this. I just hope he has as well.”

Coverage of the boxing begins at 7.30pm on Sky Sports, with Hibbert expected in the ring at roughly 8pm.
