BASILDON pool professional Jimmy Carney will be hoping to go one better this week at the IPA World Championships.

Carney was the losing finalist in November 2012 and is determined to claim the International Pool Association crown this time around.

And he is feeling in fine fettle after winning the Jimmy Carney Senior Memorial Masters event in his home town.

"I want to make amends for the last time I was in the final," said Carney. "I was leading but then went on to lose.

"My form and my mind are where I want it to be so I feel ready for it."

Carney raced into an 8-2 lead in the 2012 final against Gavin Phillips in Blackpool.

But the Scottish potter clawed back the frames to eventually win 11-9 and ruin Carney's 33rd birthday celebrations.

This time around, Carney is ranked 12th in the world and has been seeded, so he will enter the fray in Bradford today in the last 32.

And he will be hoping to carry his form from the masters event which bears his father's name.

The Jimmy Carney Senior Memorial Masters features the winners of seven Turtle Promotions leagues from south Essex plus a wild card, this year double world champ Chris Melling.

Carney beat Melling 5-2 in the quarter-final at Basildon's Q Ball sports bar before beating Jordan Sillett 5-3 in the semi-final.

The final saw Carney take on Aidan Finch, who had defeated four-time champ and title holder Brian Salmon 5-2 in their last-four match, with Carney winning 5-2 to win the crown he last held in 2011.

"I hardly missed a ball all night and I felt in the zone," added Carney, of the Masters. "It was a massive thing for me to win it again because it is named in memory of my dad.

"I felt totally in the zone at the masters and am ready for Bradford now.

"I haven't been practising as much as I used to but these days I feel quite relaxed and mature when I'm playing. I've been playing so long I just know what I've got to do."
