JOSH Newman is jumping for joy after helping Great Britain’s junior team win a silver medal at the European Trampolining Championships in Spain.

The 17-year-old, from Noak Bridge, was in fine form to secure his side a place on the medal rostrum.

And Newman was delighted to help Britain pick up their first team medal at the event in more than a decade.

“It’s the first time in 14 years any British men’s team has got a medal in a team event so it was a brilliant feeling to be part of something so special,” said Newman.

“In the build up to the event we thought a medal might be possible but we only really expected it to be a bronze.

“The teams from Russia and Belarus are both really strong but every one of us performed really well to get us into second and it was just amazing.

“With it being a team event as well it was nice because you team-mates to share the moment and success with and we were all really happy about it.”

Newman, who trains five days a week in Kent, was also far happier with his displays in the team final than in the individual events.

But he was still pleased to end the Championships on a high.

“I did a lot better in the team final than in the individual qualifying which didn’t really go as well as I would’ve liked,” said Newman.

“However, having already competed probably made me comfortable in the surroundings when I got to compete for the second time and I was pleased it ended like it did.

“It’s good my confidence and is something really good to look to build on.”

Long term, Newman is targeting a place in the Great Britain squad for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

But his next target is the British Championships which take place at Liverpool’s Echo Arena in July.

“It will be my first senior event and that’s what I’m now working towards,” said Newman, who is sponsored by Rayleigh’s Base Jump Trampoline Park.

“Hopefully I can do well there too and the success at the Europeans has certainly given me a real boost ahead of it.”
