BRINN Bevan faces an anxious weekend at the British Championships, according to his coach Scott Hann.

The 18-year-old gymnast, from Thundersley, will step up his comeback from a double leg break at the Echo Arena in Liverpool this weekend.

And Hann, who works with Bevan at the South Essex Gymnastics Club in Basildon, believes the youngster will be eager to impress in his pursuit of a place at this summer’s Olympics in Rio.

“It’s another big step forward for Brinn and I would say this is going to be an anxious weekend for him,” said Hann.

“He’s competing in four events like he did at the English Championships but he’s stepping up the routines.

“He’ll be doing proper dismounts onto hard floors but he’s training well and will look to keep it going.”

Bevan’s superstar team-mate Max Whitlock, who is gunning for Olympic glory in the summer, will also be in action in Liverpool.

But the event is less important for the 23-year-old who won two medals at the 2012 Games in the London.

“In terms of selection for Max the event isn’t as crucial for him because he’s already shown what he can do by winning the World Cup last month,” explained Hann.

“However, he’ll obviously still be wanting to do well and he’ll be looking to get into as many finals as he can.”

Reiss Beckford, who is looking to reach the Olympics with Jamaica, will be competing as a guest in Liverpool while another South Essex Gymnastics Club member, Jay Thompson, will also be looking to shine.

Thompson impressed at the recent English Championships and is now keen to build on that showing.

“Jay was our star at the English Championships, especially as he’s also on the way back from two bad injury setbacks,” said Hann.

“He’s shown great character to come back and he will be looking to score around 84 points this weekend which would be great.”

Hayden Skinner and Doug Turnbull will also be taking part in the junior event and both are determined to make a big impression.”

“Hayden is coming back from ankle and elbow injuries so he’ll be looking to do well and so will Doug,” said Hann.

“Doug didn’t have the best of times last year so he’ll keen to show what he can so overall it’s a very important weekend for all of our gymnasts.”
