A TRIO of Woodlands School’s most exciting young sports stars further enhanced their reputations in the past week, with terrific displays in a number of fields.

Halle Hilton and Alby Hill were crowned British Gymnastics Champion and Essex Boxing Champion respectively while Harry Gaish won a bronze medal at the European Jujitsu Championship in Italy.

Year 7 pupil Halle, 12, became the 2016 Compulsory 1 British Gymnastics champion at the competition in Ipswich, making it her fifth British title since 2013 and ensuring her place at the British Championships in December.

Halle was competing against the best 12-year-olds in the country over five pieces of apparatus, securing the highest score of the day on vault, bars and beam.

Halle trains five times a week at the Europa Centre in Crayford, Kent for up to 23 hours a week and is a member of the British squad.

And Halle will be looking to show her depth to British selectors while competing against older gymnasts, with the view to start showing she is ready for international competition in 2017.

"Halle is as competitive and disciplined in training as she is at competition, and this is what makes her so enjoyable to coach,” said coaches David-Roy Wood and Rochelle Douglas. “She is a great role model in our gym and has such a great team around her that all contribute to her continued success."

Harry won the bronze medal at the European Jujitsu Championship in Italy, proving his worth in the Under-13 category although he just missed out on a final spot.

Alby was named the Essex Boxing Champion in the under 34kg category in Bristol and he, along with Halle and Harry are part of Woodlands’ Elite Player Development Programme.

The programme, which helps the school’s most talented sports stars has seen a number of talents enjoy a prominent rise to stardom in recent times.

The three youngsters are given individual training outside the school, with Woodlands providing internal support as they aim to fulfil their hopes and dreams.

“All three achievements are hugely impressive,” added Jon Bonnett, the school's head of elite sport and development. “All three have excelled in the EPD Programme and we look forward to their continued success in the future.”
