BRINN Bevan has been selected in Great Britain’s gymnastics squad for this summer’s Olympic Games – just seven months after coach Scott Hann feared the teenager would never compete again.

Bevan suffered a double leg break last November and underwent surgery before Christmas.

But the former Deanes School pupil has fought back miraculously to be selected for Rio alongside his South Essex Gymnastics Club team-mate Max Whitlock.

And Hann cannot believe how quickly Bevan has come back to top form.

“When Brinn first got the injured I didn’t just think Rio was over for him I thought gymnastics might be over altogether so for him to come back like he has done is incredible,” said Hann.

“His leg was literally hanging off when it happened and there was only a small glimmer of hope as far as the Olympics were concerned.

“Brinn’s first competition back was in May but we’ve built his strength and stamina and I really couldn’t be any prouder of him now.

“He’s been on an epic journey but the form he’s shown and the way he’s worked his way back means he fully deserves his place in the squad.”

Bevan – who was part of the Great Britain team that won silver at last year’s World Championships – will again line up alongside Whitlock in Brazil.

Whitlock won two bronze medals at the London 2012 Games as well as gold on the pommel at last year’s World Championships.

And Hann was also delighted to see the 23-year-old selected.

“Max has massive credentials and he’s the favourite to challenge for medals but with that comes massive pressure which he handles so well,” said Hann.

“I’m obviously very proud of him too and for two of the gymnasts in the squad to come from our club is a great achievement.

“With that comes a mixture of pride and relief but it’s all been so stressful that I’m going to have to lie down for a couple of days now!” Hann added.

The Great Britain team – which also includes Louis Smith, Kristian Thomas and Nile Wilson - will prepare for the Olympics at Lilleshall before flying out to a training camp in Portugal.

From there the squad will head to Brazil and Hann is confident they can be in contention for a top three finish.

“I think this is the best British gymnastics team there has ever been,” said Hann.

“They are a group of phenomenal young men who are incredibly talented and driven.

“Their target will be to win a medal and I definitely believe they’re capable of doing that.”

And Hann is also sure his own gymnasts will make the most of the opportunity.

“Brinn will look to get the scores needed to help the team and will take great experience from competing too,” said Hann.

“Max will also be desperate to help the team and there are a lot of opportunities for him to do well.”
