EMILY Scott insists she is gunning for gold after being confirmed in Great Britain’s rugby sevens squad for the Olympics.

Scott – who is from Corringham – was selected in a group of 12 women for Rio.

And the 24-year-old Thurrock T-Birds player also feels her call-up shows just how far female rugby has progressed in recent seasons.

“Going back 10 years ago when I first started playing rugby at Stanford, I could never have imagined where I am now,” said Scott – a former Seevic College student.

“Back then I used to have to play in the boys’ team because there wasn’t anywhere else for the girls to play.

“Now Stanford have a thriving women’s team which is going really well and a great youth section, which also shows how far the game has come.

“The sport is also one of the fastest growing in the world and getting in the Olympics shows that.

“When I was younger I used to sit and watch the Olympics on my sofa with my parents and I never believed one day I would be there playing rugby.

“It’s so exciting but we’re going there trying to win gold now.”

Scott spoke to Echosport at the official announcement of the sevens squad in London yesterday.

But Scott actually found out about her inclusion at the start of the month after an agonising few minutes watching her computer screen.

“We could decide how we wanted to find out if we had been picked and as a group we decided it would be best by email,” said Scott.

“We were finding out at 7pm but I was sat there for about five minutes pressing refresh over and over again before it came up.

“I was obviously really happy and excited when I found out but it’s been a stressful time as we had 24 people in the training camp and only 12 got picked.

“It’s been difficult but we’ve worked really hard towards this and now we want to make sure we put in some good performances.”

The Great Britain squad will now be heading out to Brazil next week before the games get underway on Saturday, August 6.

Britain take on Brazil, Canada and Japan in the group stages and Scott is keen for the side to make a big impression.

“We’re going to Brazil for gold,” said Scott.

“That’s what we’ve said we’ve been aiming for all along and we’re certainly in the mix.

“There are probably seven other sides who are in the mix as well but we will give it everything and truly believe we can win.”
