ONE of Essex’s oldest karate clubs is celebrating yet more success after a strong showing at the International London Karate Championships.

Held at London’s 02 Arena, Thundersley’s Stock Shotokan Karate Club won 13 medals in a 40th anniversary year that is proving far from unlucky.

The winners on the day were nine-year-old Skye Taylor and eight-year-old Henri Goddard who won the Kyu Grade Pairs Kata event.

Henri went on to win the silver medal and Skye the bronze in their individual Kata section.

Bethany King, 15, and Harry Russell, 14, won gold medals in the Dan Grade Pairs Kata and Bethany also picked up a bronze medal in the Individual Girls Kata.

Grace Thompson won silver in the Ladies Black Belt Kata.

Samuel Campbell fought his way to a bronze medal in the Cadets Kumite while Sensei Adam Purkiss won bronze in the Veterans Kata.

The three of them then competed together and won a bronze medal each in the Adult Team Kata.

Club founder 5th Dan Sensei Terry Irving said: "I am delighted with the results the club has achieved so far this year, winning over 80 medals and trophies in all competitions.

“This is just a bonus of training as most start karate for fitness or self-defence reasons. It is also great for children as it builds their character and self-confidence.
