WESTWOOD Karate Academy continued a remarkable season after winning a staggering 63 medals at the Junior & Cadet National Karate Championships.

Around 40 Westwood students took part in the event held in Norwich, with more than a third of the medals brought home gold.

In the Under-11 events, Mya Francis, Victoria Turner and Sienna Keenan finished on the podium in the female orange to yellow belt Kumite event.

Anushan Kugathasan and William Middleton won gold and silver in the Kata and Alyssa Hall and Jasmine Harmon in the Green to Purple belt kumite.

Alyssa and Jasmine teamed up with Finn Tyrell to win silver in the Under-15 team kata event.

Another U11yrs gold medal winner was James Harris in kumite, while silver medals were won by Brandon Aguinaldo in Kata and Anushan in Kumite. Carla Martin won bronze in the individual female brown belt kumite, and teamed up with Brandon and Mac Oates to win bronze in the Under-15 brown belt team kata event. Eduardo Bayly-Gonzalez, Justin Price and Ben Collins won silver.

Westwood students were even more successful in the 11-14yrs events, with double gold medal winner Grace Durrant winning the orange to yellow belt kata, and in a higher grade kumite category when her own was cancelled.

The brown belt male kata event was won by Eduardo Bayly-Gonzalez. Olivia Stone was runner-up.

The Academy’s outstanding male competitor was Henry Stokes, who won three golds. Brandon also won a silver in kumite and gold in the mixed team kata event. His team mates, Eleanor Worth, and Hannah Winning were Westwood’s most successful female competitors on the day, each winning three gold medals.

Aside from team kata, Eleanor won the individual kata, and Hannah won the kumite, before teaming up with Erin Jackson to win the over 5ft team kumite event.

The Academy’s under 5ft female kumite teams finished first and second. Gold medals winners were Caitlin Day, Nadine Martin, and Olivia Stone. Caitlin won the black belt individual U5ft kumite event, with Nadine in third place. The black belt U5ft male kumite gold was won by Daniel Allen.

In the Cadet 15-17yrs, Westwood were runners-up in the team kata and team kumite (with Harrison Gill and Reece Ward, with Ryan Cooper in kata) and Dan Canham in kumite. Harrison won silver in the individual kata, with Reece taking bronze.

Cadet Steven Beavis won gold in the brown belt kata and kumite, and Dexter Goward silver in both.

Westwood Karate Academy are currently running beginner classes for adults and children in Southend, Shoebury, Leigh,Westcliff, Rayleigh, Thundersley, Canvey and Hawkwell.
