TEENAGE diving prospect Tyler Humphreys is celebrating another remarkable season, although his mum says the next two years will be critical if he is to take it to the next level.

The 13-year-old from Shoebury had an inspired season, scooping a host of accolades although there was one moment where mum Donna and dad James thought his future in the sport was over.

On Saturday, May 14, Tyler ‘misjudged’ a 3 metre platform jump and hit his head, knocking himself unconscious.

He was airlifted from Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre to Royal London Hospital, where he spent two days in intensive care and received 17 staples to the back of the head.

This was 10 weeks before he was due to compete in the Mediterranean Games Diving Championships, in Bolzano, Italy, but Donna said Tyler was not to be deterred.

“We had to massively consider his future in diving after what happened,” said Donna. “It was Tyler’s choice and he said he was going to Italy, he knew exactly what he wanted. He is determined and we are very proud at the way he handled himself.

“He competed there and did brilliantly. The next two years will make the difference as to whether he can go on and make a career of it, so there is a lot to consider.”

After having a month off, Tyler got back in training and won two silver medals in Italy, adding to success at the G-Star Championships, the National Cup and the British Elite Junior Diving Championships.

Although Donna says her son, who attends Shoebury High School, is already back in training ahead of the new season, starting in November.

“He is in training and were getting ready for the Luton Challenge next up,” she said. “He will have a bit of a rest of course but he is so determined to do well.”

Tyler is looking for sponsorship to help with costs ahead of the new season. Anyone able to help can contact Donna Humphreys on 07944740897.
