PHOENIX Karate club is celebrating national success after members of the south Essex club won in Glasgow.
Benfleet 10-year-old Ted Varnes teamed up with Canvey clubmates Cameron Daykins and Alex Badacian to win the team kata at the nationals.
The team of Kathleen Pulham, Chelsy Dolby and Mai Pulham, who all live on Canvey, finished third in the girls’ team kata competition.
Varnes, Badacian and Dolby tasted more success in the team kumite section where they triumphed in the under-11 category.
And Mai Pulham, 14, from Canvey and Stanford-le-Hope youngsters Amie Corbyn, 15, and Charlie Betts, 12, were victorious in the over 5ft team kumite section after a series of hard-fought rounds.
Phoenix members also received numerous individual awards, including second and third places for Piau Maprangon, Kathleen Pulham, Haley Marney, Karen Daykin, Mai Pulham, Charlie Betts in both kata and kumite.
Phoenix Karate Club offers 28 classes a week at a variety of venues in Essex.
