SCOTT Hann has been named outstanding coach of the year at the British Gymnastics National Awards.

Hann coaches a number of top stars, including double Olympic champion Max Whitlock, at the South Essex Gymnastics Club in Basildon.

And he was delighted to pick up the award.

“I don’t feel any different than any other coach in British Gymnastics but I am very grateful for being awarded the Outstanding Coach of Year award,” said Hann.

“Without the support of my club South Essex and British Gymnastics our achievements in the recent years and particularly in Rio would not have been possible.

“British Gymnastics is a fantastic organisation and I feel honoured and privileged to represent its coaching community.”

Hann was presented with the award during the prize ceremony held in Leicester at the weekend.

But his was not the only award heading back to Basildon as Whitlock won the outstanding athlete of the year award after his stunning displays at the Olympics.

And Whitlock was also very happy to have picked up another trophy.

“It’s an absolute honour for me to win the Athlete of the Year and John Atkinson awards,” said Whitlock.

“Thank you very much to everyone involved.

“It’s been a very long journey to get to this point. The whole team have done an incredible job and to be standing here it’s an amazing feeling.”

Whitlock won gold on the floor and pommel horse at the Olympics Games in Rio this summer and also finished third in the all around final.

The 23-year-old was joined in Rio by South Essex Gymnastics club team-mate Brinn Bevan who battled back from a broken leg to make the squad.
