DOUBLE Olympic champion Max Whitlock believes being on the shortlist for Sunday’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award will be the perfect way for him to end a stunning 2016.

The superstar gymnast - who is based in Basildon - won two gold medals and a bronze in Rio.

But he still finds it strange to see his name listed alongside the likes of Andy Murray, Mo Farah and Gareth Bale, who are also in contention for the top award.

“I’m looking forward to Sunday but I find it weird to see my name with the other people nominated because I don’t look at myself like that,” said Whitlock.

“It’s crazy to think I’m up there with them and it doesn’t really seem real.

“It’s a hat-trick for me though as this is the third year I’ve made the list and that’s something I’m really proud of.

“It’s an absolute honour to be on there and the fact it’s been extended to 16 people this year shows how many fantastic achievements there have been this year.

“I’m really looking forward to the night because it’s always a top evening and it’s the perfect way to end what has been an amazing 2016.”

The main highlights of Whitlock’s stunning season came in Rio where he won two gold medals in less than 90 minutes.

But the down to earth 23-year-old believes his achievements may never sink in.

“It still feels very surreal if I’m honest,” said Whitlock.

“When I get introduced with the recent results from the Olympic Games it doesn’t seem real and I’m not sure it will ever sink in.”

However, Whitlock still remains determined to secure more success and he is already back in training.

“As a gymnast you’re straight back in to it, you set new goals and want to learn new skills,” said Whitlock.

“I’ve got the major championships next year and that’s the main target now.

“I want to be ready for the European Championships and all the events we have coming up and that’s what we’re working towards.

“I want to retain titles and that’s a massive, massive motivation for me so I’m still as determined as ever.

“I can’t wait to get going in 2017 but I wouldn’t be here without all the support I get so I would like say thank you to the people of Essex who always back me.

“They’ve been brilliant.”

>Sunday’s awards ceremony, which is taking place at the Genting Arena in Birmingham, will be shown live on BBC One starting at 6.40pm.
