DANIEL Webb has been appointed as Leyton Orient’s new manager after the resignation of Andy Edwards.

Webb, whose dad David is regarded as one the most successful managers in the history of Southend United, will be in charge until the end of the season.

The former Shrimpers striker, 33, was assistant manager to Edwards prior to his decision to step down in favour of a coaching role at the Football Association.

Edwards also has strong links to Roots Hall having made more than 200 appearances during two spells with Blues.

Edwards said: “It is with regret that I have made the decision to stand down as manager of Leyton Orient.

“It has been a very difficult decision but I feel that it is in the best interests of my career and my family.

“I have been offered and duly accepted a role working within the coaching department of the Football Association.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to have worked for the club for over seven and a half years.

“I thank the chairman for the opportunity to manage the team and I thank all staff, players and supporters for the backing that they have given to me in my time here.

“It goes without saying that I wish Leyton Orient every success in the challenge ahead and in the longer-term future.”

Webb, who attended Southend High School and still lives in Leigh, is Leyton Orient’s fourth manager of a turbulent campaign.

This will be Webb’s first time in the managerial hotseat.

And he will be looking to steer the O’s, who are currently in the League Two relegation zone, to safety.

Webb, who played locally for Ekco Whitecaps in his youth, will take charge of his first game on Saturday when Orient host Carlisle United.

He will now also be hoping to follow in the foot-steps of his father David by carving out a successful career as a manager.

David Webb won two promotions while in charge of the Shrimpers and took the club into the second tier of English football for the first time in their history back in 1991 after a memorable victory at Bury.

He also had spells in charge of Chelsea, Brentford and Yeovil Town.
