ARSENAL under-20s star Chloe Brunton-Wilde says learning off England’s all-time leading goalscorer is making her a better player.

The 19-year-old from Shoebury joined the Gunners in 2012 and has grown into a crucial player for the talented team.

With three league and FA Cup titles in the last three seasons, and both still a possibility this year, Brunton-Wilde is being managed this term by former Arsenal and England favourite Kelly Smith.

Smith, who has 46 goals in 117 appearances for her country, was appointed manager of the Arsenal Development Squad at the start of 2017.

And Brunton-Wilde said she loves playing under Smith.

“I have idolised her since I first started playing football,” said the former Shoebury High School pupil.

“It was all about her. When I was training with the first team I would see her and just think ‘wow’ but now I am used to it and am learning a lot from her.

“I looked up to her and now she is our manager. When she compliments you, you really believe it and it is a great feeling.

“But I still want to push on and keep achieving more.”

Arsenal are currently fifth in the FA WSL Women’s Development League, although have as many as six games in hand on the sides above them.

And with an FA Cup final against Bristol City to come next month, Brunton-Wilde says it promises to be a busy time.

“Last season we went unbeaten and I think we felt a bit of pressure after what we did last year,” she said.

“We have won six of our eight games so far but have missed a few players to international call-ups.

“But the FA Cup and the league is what we wanted to win and we still can.”

Brunton-Wilde admits she is still hoping for a call-up to an England squad, having played every minute of Arsenal’s season to date.

But she insists she is focused on helping Arsenal achieve their goals and playing well, and should international recognition follow then that would be great.

“We have played together for three or four years and there is always room to improve,” she said.

“I feel fluent. I have been playing well and there is more competition this year too as we have signed good players.

“You need to play well and hope it is recognised. Let’s hope I keep doing that and I think I am on the right path.”
