STUART Bingham will hold a narrow 5-4 advantage over Peter Ebdon when their first-round Betfred World Championship match resumes on Monday morning.

The Basildon potter had led 5-2 on Sunday but Ebdon won the eighth frame before claiming a dramatic ninth on a re-spotted black, having at one point needed four snookers.

The winner of the best of 19 first-round match between these two former world champions will face 14th-seed Kyren Wilson in the second round, after he battled past qualifier David Grace 10-6 in his own first-round match which concluded earlier on Sunday morning.

Third-seed Bingham looked immediately comfortable on his return to the prestigious setting of Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre as he made 91 in the opening frame to take an early lead.

A half-hour frame followed but it was the 2015 World Champion that again snuck over the line with a clearance of 32 to double his advantage.

And Ball-run Bingham stretched his lead further over 2002 Crucible winner Ebdon with a break of 80, before missing a red when a first century looked certain.

But the 46-year-old finally got himself on the scoreboard prior to the mid-session interval, with his highest break after four frames just 31 as he trailed 3-1.

Ebdon was soon back within a single frame though, thanks to a break of 43, but it didn't last long as Bingham replied with 74 in frame six before a 122 break put him in control at 5-2.

His opponent refused to back down however, as he followed up success in the eighth frame with a miraculous comeback, including a clearance of 66, to earn a re-spotted black.

And Ebdon made no mistake under the fiercest of pressure as he reduced the deficit to just a single frame ahead of the match's resumption on Monday morning.

Elsewhere on Sunday, five-time Crucible winner Ronnie O'Sullivan overcame the stubborn Gary Wilson 10-7 while fifth seed Shaun Murphy is 6-3 up against China's Yan Bingtao.

And Mark Selby and Stephen Maguire are already through to the second round of the Betfred World Championships after Saturday victories over Fergal O'Brien and Anthony McGill, respectively.
