C&K Basildon skipper Zoe Rushen was left feeling frustrated following her side’s 2-0 defeat against Lewes.

Basildon had been hoping to triumph in their penultimate home match of the FA Premier League South season.

But Lewes had other ideas and their triumph saw Basildon slip down to seventh in the standings, much to the disappointment of Rushen.

“It was a tough battle against a strong team,” said Rushen.

“It was frustrating not to get something from the game but there can’t be too many complaints as we failed to create many chances on the day.”

C&K Basildon will now be looking to bounce back against Charlton Athletic this weekend in their final outing of the season.

But, whatever the outcome against the Addicks, Rushen will be proud of the progress Steve Tilson’s side have made this campaign.

“With one game left we still need to stay focused and switched on to the challenge that Charlton will bring on Sunday. but all things considered it’s been our most successful season so far,” said Rushen.

“I’m extremely proud of every single person involved with the club.

“It’s been a pleasure to turn up to each session and each game knowing how strong we are as a team and knowing that we are improving week by week.

“I’m already excited to get going again next season.”

With both sides sitting in a mid-table position, Sunday’s match was a predictably tight and well contested affair.

But, after a cagey opening 10 minutes, Basildon had the first opportunity of the match when Jay Blackie’s cross found Angela Addison inside the Lewes penalty area but Addison saw her shot blocked.

Moments later, Basildon’s Blackie saw an effort ruled out for handball before Lewes broke the deadlock when Sian Heather fired home after goalkeeper Nikita Runnacles had initially done well to block a shot.

Lewes then doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Georgia Bridges shot low past Runnacles and Basildon were unable to get back into the game despite Rushen twice going close late on.

C&K Basildon: Runnacles, Nash, Donahue, Revell, Porter, Wakefield, A Addison (Debell), Rushen, Little, Blackie and Rodney (T Addison).
