C&K Basildon Ladies moved into second place in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division standings after securing a 3-1 win over Swindon Town.

Steve Tilson’s side went into the clash looking to build on their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace seven days earlier.

And an Angela Addison brace, along with a Zoe Rushen strike, enabled the hosts to claim all three points.

But Tilson was keen to emphasise that his charges were not at their best.

The former Southend United boss said: “I’m really pleased with the result, but we didn’t perform anywhere near as well as we can.

“But the most important thing is to get the result because it puts pressure on the likes of Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace if we keep on winning our games.

“Neither of those sides play in a couple of weeks so we could end up going top of the league.

“Swindon went 1-0 up and it shows that there are no easy games in this league.

“They put us under pressure and made it tough for us.

“Swindon stayed in the game and when it’s a tight game there is always a chance.

“We should have been more clinical in the final third but we got over the line in the end.”

Swindon travelled to the Frost Hire Stadium having lost all 14 of their league matches so far this season.

But the visitors went ahead on 18 minutes thanks to a close range effort despite C&K Basildon enjoying a promising start to the encounter.

Although playing through illness, Addison rose highest to head home an Ellie Manning cross soon after going behind.

Addison doubled her tally just past the half hour mark as her sweetly-struck effort found the back of the net following April Bowers’ centre.

Captain Rushen put the game beyond doubt with eight minutes to play as her long-range strike deceived the goalkeeper and the ball nestled in the back of the net.

As a result, C&K Basildon were able to pick up their seventh consecutive league win and move to within two points of FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division table-toppers Charlton.

Tilson added: “The girls have been fantastic this season and we are overachieving by so much that it is unbelievable.

“We’ve got eight league games left and we’ll take them as they come.

“Who knows what may happen if we stay injury free between now and the end of the season.

“Angela has been tremendous for us and probably shouldn’t have started because she was ill.

“We’ve had a bug going through the camp and she wasn’t well but she has been brilliant since coming through our development squad.

“We are away to QPR on Sunday and we know it will be a tough game.

“They have signed four or five new players so it won’t be easy.”
